Wailing Sarah!

Here’s a fun caricature/illustration commission from Melbourne' comedian Sarah Nicolazzo (AKA Wailing Sarah). Sarah is a real changeling, and her characters she creates are hilarious. The brief was to create a profile picture for social media commemorating her account’s first anniversary. Sarah has a rubber face, and many identities, so the challenge was to draw her facial expressions while keeping her core likeness.

One of the reasons Sarah approached me was that we have a MAD connection; me drawing for the magazine, and her mentor appeared on MAD TV. I thought that was pretty cool!

I really enjoyed the process with this project. I started with four thumbnails, and then using Sarah’s feedback and direction we refined and distilled the art into the finished form.

I also supplied a sheet of work-in-progress (“WIP”) colour variations. Sarah chose the orange/red as it went with her branding, and I supplied a few variations (on white, black, and yellow) for the finished versions.
